Each competitive game type has its own rank. In other words, you will be a superchampion in 2v2, but just a chance in 3v3. It takes 10 matches to earn a rank in any of those modes. Your performance in those 10 games will determine your initial ranking. Rankings are only affected by wins and losses...

Old School Runescape also does not play like most MMOs

  • Most MMOs lead you on a campaign that introduces the most important characters, areas and OSRS gold activities, and only then do they take the leash off and tell you to do anything you want. That last bit is where Old School Runescape starts. It's a sandbox MMORPG that is deliberately grindy and intimidatingly hands-off. You go through a five-minute tutorial which teaches you the absolute bare minimum and then you're unceremoniously dropped into the hometown of Lumbridge. It is the kind of game where you need to bookmark the wiki before you can get everywhere. But if you're eager to push the brutal learning curve, and should you discover Runescape's freewheeling sense of adventure liberating instead of overwhelming, you may well find your forever game.

Part of the reason Old School Runescape is really bad at explaining itself comes down to its heritage. There was just Runescape. But after a major update completely overhauled Runescape and turned it into what has become colloquially called Runescape 3, Jagex conducted a poll to see if players wanted independent servers in which they could play Runescape as it had been back in the afternoon. So, the threadbare tutorial is much more than enough for people who've played Runescape before (like myself). Nevertheless, Old School could stand to direct new players somewhat better, since it is totally unlike other MMOs.

For starters, there are no courses, only skills. Everyone has the exact same 23 skills, which could be grouped into battle skills like Power and Ranged, crafting abilities like Herblore and Fletching, and collecting skills like Fishing and Mining. To put it differently, you are not a mage, you've got high Magic. You are not a warrior, you've got high Attack, Power, and Defence. Your abilities reflect your playstyle, but there isn't a difficult division between character types. Everybody is encouraged to level all their skills, and the ending goal for most players is to find all them to 99.

Old School Runescape also does not play like most MMOs. It lacks the how to buy osrs gold customary selection of ability pubs, hotkeys and cooldowns. It feels more like a classic cRPG. The world is laid out on a grid, and to maneuver your character, you click the square you would like to move to. To speak with an NPC, you click on their"Talk to" option. To attack a monster, you click its"Strike" option. You can do virtually everything without touching your keyboard, though it's much easier to play once you establish a couple of shortcuts.
